A girl in the middle of the revolution
In Persepolis, you follow Marjane, a 9-year-old girl growing up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. She witnesses how fundamentalists force women to wear veils and imprison people. Yet, in that precarious environment, she manages to find her own world: she discovers punk, Iron Maiden, and Abba. The animated film is based on the comic of the same name by Marjane Satrapi, who describes her own life.
From Tehran to Vienna
Her parents send Marjane to Austria to bring her to safety. In Europe, she slowly finds a place, but the sense of belonging remains far away. Eventually, she returns to Iran, because that country feels like home to her, despite the harsh regime. Persepolis shows how someone searches for identity between two cultures and worlds.
