Based on a science fiction classic
The film is based on the story Farewell to the Master (1940) by Harry Bates, published in the magazine Astounding Science-Fiction . Director Robert Wise, known for his editing work on Citizen Kane (1941), brought this story to the big screen. He later also directed West Side Story and The Sound of Music . In 2008, a remake was released starring Keanu Reeves.
