Kornyev does his utmost to meet the prisoner. This concerns the heavily guarded party veteran Stepnyak. Afterwards, Kornyev decides to travel to Moscow. He wants to present the case to the chief prosecutor. In his quest for justice, Kornyev soon discovers the harsh logic of a totalitarian regime.
