A fairy tale with irony and color
Director Jacques Demy adapted Charles Perrault's classic fairy tale into an imaginative musical. A king promises his dying queen that he will only remarry a woman of equal beauty. When he chooses his own daughter, she desperately asks her godmother, the Lilac Fairy, for help. She devises a plan: the princess asks for dresses in the colors of the weather, the moon, and the sun. Disguised in a donkey skin, she flees to another kingdom.

The dialogue in Peau d'âne is spoken, but Michel Legrand's music sweeps the actors along until they regularly burst into song. Irony, erotic undertones, and political views are fully explored. The film ends with a serene white wedding party as the apotheosis of a long, musical finale.
