Green sculpture garden
A new cultural space is emerging at the INDEBT Foundation. An important part of this is the ecological sculpture garden by Rein Kooyman. In this project, he combines garden design with visual art. This large artwork serves as a site for research. But it is also a green oasis in the heart of De Pijp where artists, children, the elderly and local residents can unwind.
The garden builds upon Kooyman's earlier work, Navigating the Unseen (2021), in which he used natural materials such as stone and moss for his artworks. In this garden, he works with the classic Dutch paving tile. This tile symbolises the post-war architectural style. By transforming the square, hard tile into round, flowing forms, something hard changes into something that feels natural and lively.
The garden changes with the Dutch seasons. Kooyman creates the garden from natural residual materials. In this way, a distinction arises between nature and what man makes. Ultimately, a garden is not real nature. It is a place where people shape nature and where nature and design meet.
