Submerged (2026)
This work by Elspeth Diederix is a model for a sculptural garden that provides habitat for the wildlife of Amsterdam's canals. Inspired by an underwater garden, she designed a version for the ecosystem around Warmoesstraat. The ceramic forms evoke trees and canal walls and function as a habitat for fish, mussels, plants, and birds, a vision of the future where city and nature reinforce each other.
Café Old Sailor, founded in 1930 in the heart of the Red Light District, with its location on the canal forms a direct connection with the water landscape that is central to the work.
Diederix is known for her poetic approach to the everyday, transforming ordinary objects into images that invite renewed perception.
