Photography on identity and self-expression in Mexico City

Photographer Pieter Henket traveled to Mexico City and created portraits of people living outside the traditional boundaries of gender and identity. Together with stylist Chino Castilla, he set up a studio where each portrait is meticulously created. Costume, lighting, and staging play an important role in the images. The portraits reveal how the subjects see themselves and how they wish to be seen.

Personal images between ritual and performance

The Birds of Mexico City series is part of Henket’s broader Birds project, which revolves around freedom and authenticity. The images operate at the intersection of identity, ritual, and performance. They are intimate portraits that invite you to pause for a moment and reflect on what it means to express yourself freely.
