Over more than five decades, The Tallis Scholars have established themselves as a leading ensemble for Renaissance vocal music. The purity, clarity, and purity of their sound, supported by the rich English choral tradition, have made them famous and beloved. That sound is based in particular on the demands of the music of a composer like Palestrina. This English ensemble has presented numerous programs centered around his music.

Muhly

Over the years, conductor Peter Phillips discovered that contemporary music can enrich a concert featuring Renaissance repertoire. He seeks out 'new notes' that benefit from the ensemble's characteristic choral sound. 'The composer who immediately understood our specific sound turned out to be Nico Muhly. As a choirboy, he had absorbed the many timbres of sacred choral music and soon knew how best to write for us. A series of masterpieces followed, each one more powerful than the last,' says Peter Phillips. All of Muhly's works on this program are having their Dutch premiere this afternoon!
