Quintets for piano and winds by Mozart and Beethoven

The quintets for piano and winds by Mozart and Beethoven are, as it were, related. Beethoven knew Mozart's quintet when, twelve years later, as a young man in his twenties, he wrote a piece for the same instrumentation. Mozart's masterpiece, which he himself considered one of his best, and Beethoven's early follower share many similarities. Both pieces possess a relaxed simplicity that should not be confused with simplistic: both pieces have an extraordinary charge and depth. Naturally, there are also differences: where Mozart integrated the piano into the ensemble, in Beethoven's work it is given a solo role.

The wind players of the Concertgebouw Orchestra know each other's playing inside out. They are so attuned to one another that they sometimes sound almost like a single instrument. At the same time, the Concertgebouw Orchestra is known precisely as an orchestra in which individual musicians are given space and can bring in their own influences. Each wind player has their own sound and style, which makes the group unique. Together with pianist Natacha Kudritskaya, these four wind players from the orchestra perform the beautiful quintets by Mozart and Beethoven.
