The person behind the mask

Pulcinella is one of the most famous figures from the commedia dell'arte. He is a jester, a rebel, someone who disrupts order and holds up a mirror to people. Brash and stubborn, but always with a wink. For centuries, he has appeared in theatre and music. But who is actually hiding behind that mask? That is the question that Pynarello and mime artist Jochem Stavenuiter explore together in Pulcinella.

Mime and music in motion

Jochem Stavenuiter is the founder of mime theatre group Bambie and is known for his physical and visual performance style. In Pulcinella, the boundaries between movement and music blur. The jester turns the ensemble upside down, and the musicians become part of the choreography. Movement and sound constantly reinforce each other.

Music from Pergolesi to Stravinsky

Pynarello plays music by composers who were inspired by the figure of Pulcinella: from Pergolesi and Gallo to Stravinsky. Stravinsky wrote his famous ballet Pulcinella in 1920, based on material by Pergolesi. That layered musical tradition forms the common thread of the programme.
