Jelle Roozenburg’s Bonsai Orchestra

1/2
Slide 1 of 2

The thirteen-piece orchestra of the unconventional guitarist Jelle Roozenburg presents an absurdist musical manifesto against alienation at Bimhuis. We are increasingly connected, yet sometimes seem increasingly alone. Guitarist Jelle Roozenburg counters this with his thirteen-piece Bonsai Orchestra in a musical manifesto: 'Dis//connect', a new composition about alienation in a world full of technology and individualism. Absurdism is the common thread in this musical and theatrical trip, in which Roozenburg merges punk, ambient, noise, modern classical, and electronic music into a potpourri of extremes.

Bonsai Orchestra

The core remains jazz, with room for improvisation and the voice of every musician. In this way, the piece reflects the spirit of the times, but above all, it is about human connection. Roozenburg is a guitarist, electronic musician, and bandleader, and composes and arranges for, among others, the New Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra. With trombonist Louk Boudesteijn, he founded the quintet Bonsai Panda, which released six albums on which jazz, rock, classical, and improvisation come together in a true fever dream. That band forms the basis of the Bonsai Orchestra. Dis//connect was created within JOC Productions, the talent program of the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw (JOC).
