John Coltrane

He was only forty years old, but during his short life, tenor saxophonist John Coltrane managed to leave an unprecedented mark on global jazz. As a performer, as a composer, and above all in both capacities as an innovator who shook jazz to its foundations worldwide. He was a guest at the Concertgebouw three times. In April 1960, he made his debut in the Main Hall as a member of the Miles Davis Quintet. In November 1961, he returned with his own John Coltrane Quartet, including Eric Dolphy, and in October 1963, he gave another legendary concert with his quartet. Tonight, his soul briefly returns to the Main Hall during a tribute by saxophonist Joshua Redman and the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw.

Joshua Redman

Joshua Redman is one of the most beloved jazz saxophonists of his generation. Growing up in a musical family, he developed his own lyrical style. After studying at Harvard, he chose music after all and broke through by winning the Thelonious Monk Competition. Since then, he has worked with greats ranging from Yo-Yo Ma to The Rolling Stones. In 2022, he gave a legendary performance in our Main Hall together with his all-star quartet, featuring pianist Brad Mehldau, bassist Christian McBride, and drummer Brian Blade.

Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw

The Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw consists of world-class Dutch jazz musicians. The big band ranks among the top in Europe, has won multiple Edison Awards, and has previously collaborated with legends such as Chick Corea, Dr. Lonnie Smith, and Branford Marsalis. In addition to aiming to make more than a century of Dutch jazz accessible to new generations, the orchestra also likes to look ahead and collaborates with contemporary (jazz) musicians from all corners of the world.
