The Red Light District's Brokers Bar Jazz Club continues this summer! Live contemporary jazz inside the historic Beurs van Berlage, with specialty cocktails and views over Centraal. This Friday, Spanish saxophonist Diego Cañada (with David Saruchanov on piano, Samuel Kiel on bass, and Florian Marka on drums) is blending jazz with flamenco and Afro-Cuban rhythm, followed by a players' session.
Diego Cañada is a Spanish saxophonist and composer working between Amsterdam, Madrid, and Paris, with a sound that draws on jazz, flamenco, and Afro-Cuban tradition in equal measure. He began performing professionally as a teenager in the Madrid jazz and Latin music scene, playing alongside Jerry González, Michael Olivera, Rodney Barreto, and Román Filiú, and worked with flamenco artists including Ramón Porrina, Juan Antonio Salazar, Dan Ben Lior, and Jorge Pardo. He's performed at BIMHUIS, Café Berlin, Vortex, and Duc des Lombards, and at festivals including Jazz in Marciac and the Jazz Plaza Festival in Cuba.
His project Gestos is a tribute to the life carried within every gesture across generations. It explores how, from childhood, we unconsciously learn movements and make them our own without even realizing it.
Sound and Movement
Diego is completing his Bachelor's in Jazz Saxophone at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam under Ben van Gelder and Simon Rigter, with an Erasmus year at the Paris Conservatoire studying with François Théberge and Stéphane Payen. He's also studied contemporary dance in Paris, an influence that shows in how he approaches rhythm and movement in his playing. Diego will be joined by David Saruchanov on piano, Samuel Kiel on bass, and Florian Marka on drums.
Players' Session
After the concert, the music continues with a players' session – all musicians welcome. Bring your instrument!
