Workshop Nocturnes (16+)

Image from James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Nocturne: Blauw en zilver - Chelsea, ca. 1872-5, Olieverf op paneel, 50,2 x 60,8 cm, Tate, Londen. (Legaat van Rachel and Jean Alexander, 1972)

Whistler's work is quiet and refined. This is certainly true for his nocturnes (night landscapes) which he painted layer upon layer in moody colours. Just like Whistler, you are going to create nocturnes. In doing so, you will try, just like him, to explore the boundary between figuration and abstraction. Which details can you still leave out? How do you achieve a maximum effect with a minimum of colours?
