Hidden heritage in Nieuw-West
This historic site in Nieuw-West is part of the Amsterdam Defence Line. Old buildings, a green environment, and contemporary art come together here. The most striking building on the site, nicknamed 'the castle' by the residents themselves, was built in the early 1900s as a water purification plant.
Art and makers on the site
Nowadays, artists and makers live and work on the site, including in the so-called cube. Normally, this place is not open to the public, but during 24 Hours Nieuw-West, you are welcome to look around and meet the makers.
Between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM, the garden, the studio, the Space To Be studio, the bunker, and the restaurant are open to visitors. In the garden, you can see work by Atten van der Vlugt and Jeroen Henneman, among others. There is also a joint art presentation and an open studio, with space for meeting and conversation.
Guided tour or walk-in
You can participate in a short workshop or join a guided tour of the grounds. There, you will learn more about the place's history, its current use, and the relationship among art, buildings, and landscape. You can also walk around on your own, have a drink in the restaurant, and chat with the makers.
