Walk through Spuistraat and discover the rich history of the Dominicus Church. Formerly, the clandestine church 't Stadhuys van Hoorn stood here, a place where religious communities met in secret. The facade stone depicting the old town hall of Hoorn still serves as a reminder of this era. The church has a strong connection to the Dominicans, an order that has been preaching the gospel since 1216.
The Dominicus Church in Amsterdam, designed by Pierre Cuypers, is an impressive example of Neo-Gothic architecture. Cuypers, known for the Rijksmuseum and Central Station, designed this church between 1883 and 1893. The building is the only Cuypers church in Amsterdam that is still in use. Inside the Dominicus Church, the abundance of visual elements is immediately striking. Cuypers' design leads you from the entrance to the raised chancel. Originally, the layout was centered on the main altar, but the arrangement was altered in 1973. Now, a large platform forms the liturgical center. Every detail, from the Stations of the Cross in the side aisles to the psalm texts on the starry ceiling, tells its own story.
Note the clever solution by organ builder Adema, who split the organ pipes in two to keep the windows and murals visible. The organ's console, once separate from the instrument, can now even be found on the floor. The walls and windows are decorated with images of Biblical figures, saints, and Church Fathers, making every visit a journey of discovery.
