Looking for good quality food to accompany your journey on the metro? There are great food spots from around the world both near and inside Amsterdam's metro stations. Head to one or two in a hurry, or plan an entire food pilgrimage for yourself, with roti from Indonesia, gyros from Greece, or American smashburgers.

De Hapjeshoek Waterlooplein

The best Surinamese spot in the city, housed in an unassuming location – Waterlooplein Metro station. Cafeteria-style and originally spotlighted on the food-travel show Somebody Feed Phil, it has only grown more and more popular since. The lines are long for a reason and the “Roti”- fried and spiced flatbreads are a must-order. The Vegetarian Roti roll is a commuter's dream, graciously filled with long beans, potatoes, tempeh, chickpeas and tofu.

Little Paradise Sandwich Shop

Only a one-minute walk from the Nieuwmarkt Metro station, this Turkish sandwich stop promises breaded paradise to commuters and general customers alike. Fresh produce is laid out on the counter, granting the aesthetics of a farm shop near the centre of the city. Make sure to get the lamb sandwich, presented in toasted sourdough and filled with vegetables along with one of their colourful smoothies.

Variety is the keyword at this outside food court in Zuidoost, where you can find Johnnycakes, tacos, Bara, roti, BBQ, and more all alongside each other. Five minutes away from the Johan Cruyff Bijlmer Arena station and right in front of the arena itself. Perfect for match goers with adventurous taste buds.

Ez Smash

Another e(z)asy-to-reach choice, this Americana-inspired burger joint in Noord does everything expected from it and more. Indulge in a triple-smash burger with melted cheese (American, of course), lathered in their house sauce, while the vegetables  - onions, pickles and lettuce - provide freshness. Wash it down with a homemade lemonade before fighting the food coma all the way home on the metro.

Ez Smash|  Monday-Sunday 11:30-21:00 | Distance: Inside Noord Metro

Wagaya Japan Onigiri

Japanese cuisine, located directly in the Wibautstraat metro station, meaning you won’t even have to go outside to indulge in their selection of “onigiri” (rice balls). The Salmon and Unagi come heavily recommended, while the avocado option will keep the vegetarians among us more than satisfied. The seaweed wrap is given to you separately, ensuring a crisp bite whenever you choose to have it.

The Gyros Lab

Greece has long been known for its many inventions, but few are tastier than a “Gyros”; their answer to kebabs, available just a five-minute walk from the De Pijp metro.  This lab of culinary science specialises in warm, greasy, salty goodness wrapped in a pita, with chips to soak up all that excess moisture and tzatziki sauce to die for. The menu also includes salad, souvlaki and more, but who are you kidding – you know what to order.

The Gyros Lab| Tuesday–Sunday 17:00-22:00 | Distance: Five-minute walk from Depijp Metro

Popeye

Not to be confused with the American fast-food chain of a similar name, this family-run Syrian spot promises warm food and warmer service beside the Noorderpark station, just one metro stop further than Centraal. The falafel and shawarma come in large, hearty portions, while Kibbeh – bulghur balls stuffed with ground beef and aromatic spices, then deep-fried – are a standout.
