De Filmhallen

With nine screens and some 800 chairs, De Filmhallen Amsterdam is the largest independent cinema in the Netherlands.

Independent cinema in Amsterdam

Housed in De Hallen, a former tram depot in the Amsterdam neighbourhood of Oud-West that’s been repurposed for cultural, culinary and creative companies.

De Filmhallen is the cousin of another famous city cinema: The Movies. As such, the programming is similar to that of The Movies, only on larger scale. Expect the better Hollywood film fare combined with quality European and world cinema. De Filmhallen also promises a broad children’s programme and collaborations with local film festivals. One partnership deserves special mention: not only is screen outfitted with the authentic art deco interior of the famous Parisien auditorium from the old Filmmuseum in the Vondelpark, this screening room also serves as an auxiliary space for the EYE Filmmuseum itself, with its own independent programming.
