Family friendly accommodation in Amsterdam

Accommodation - being Amsterdam - can often involve a steep flight of stairs that is anything-but child or buggy friendly. Here's our list of best family friendly hotels in Amsterdam, all styles and price ranges.

Luxury

The Pulitzer Hotel

The Pulitzer Hotel (pictured) is one of the most fabulous in the city, and if your budget can stretch to it there’s a huge amount on offer for families.  From interconnected rooms to large family rooms and suites, the experience is enhanced by child-friendly amenities, gardens and a family friendly approach in the restaurant.  A wonderful place that is surprisingly brilliant for kids.

The Andaz Hotel

The Andaz Hotel is an Alice in Wonderland inspired residence located on one of the city’s most beautiful canals.  Suites and large garden view rooms can accommodate three and interconnecting rooms are available for larger families.  They can arrange babysitting, kids’-sized food portions in the restaurant and they even offer a Very Important Dog programme for furry family members.

The Conservatorium Hotel

The Conservatorium Hotel is a seriously high-end place to stay but families are welcome.  Suites can be set up with extra beds or double sofa beds and there are wooden cribs on offer.  Nannies can be arranged and the hotel can recommend and arrange the city’s best family friendly activities.

The Dylan Hotel

At the beautiful 40 room Dylan Hotel there are connecting rooms in all categories and cots and babysitting on offer.  They even have a WiiU which can be installed with parental approval although you run the risk of your little ones being reluctant to step outside and enjoy the stunning views on their doorstep.

Boutique

The College Hotel

The fabulous College Hotel is a former school now staffed by students of hotel management.  Deluxe rooms and Junior Suites can accommodate three and for bigger families, interconnecting rooms are available.  Cots and babysitting can be arranged and they welcome children in their gorgeous lounge.

Max Brown Hotels

Max Brown Hotels (pictured) offer two fantastic city-centre accommodations.  Based in converted townhouses they offer a contemporary but warm vibe.  Both locations offer inviting 4 sleeper loft rooms and the Museum Square branch has an additional 3 sleeper room.  These hotels are high on my list for a visit in the near future.

Hotel Dwars

For something small and intimate how about the lovely Hotel Dwars, a small, central and stylish place to stay which unusually has triple and quad rooms available and offers cots without charge as well as stroopwafels for your mini-munches.

Hotel Estherea

The extraordinary Hotel Estherea with its lush and quirky aesthetic has a great reputation with families.  There are family rooms that sleep 4 as well as interconnecting options.  Cots and babysitting are available.  Children receive a small gift on arrival, staff will bring hot chocolate and doughnuts to the room and there's a play corner downstairs.

Hip

The Hoxton Hotel

The ever-cool Hoxton is the perfect place for mini-hipsters to rest their weary heads.  ‘Cosy’ rooms can be connected to ‘ShoeBox’ rooms to accommodate a family of 4 and the restaurant offers kid-friendly faves in a space that was designed for exploration.

The Sir Hotels

Amsterdam has two boutique “Sir” hotels by way of the Sir Albert and Sir Adam.  With interconnecting rooms, cots and a “disco lift” at the new Sir Adam they may market themselves as a hipsters paradise but that doesn’t mean that your little groover won’t love a chance to stay at one of the city’s hottest addresses.

Hotel Not Hotel

At Hotel Not Hotel (pictured) you can sleep behind a secret bookcase, in a Spanish Villa or onboard a tram.  Intrigued?  This hostel offers small (sometimes tiny) but affordable rooms near the amazing De Hallen complex.  For families there are two 4 person rooms and the whole place offers the wow factor by the bucketload.

V Hotels

The three V Hotels in Amsterdam are contemporary, stylish and cool.  They offer studio apartments, interconnecting rooms and family friendly food.  The Fizeaustraat property is by the Frankendael park which is the perfect place for the kidlets to let off steam.

Mid range

Conscious Hotels

There are three Conscious Hotels in Amsterdam and a fourth opening soon.  Whilst their ethos is about being sustainable and eco-friendly they claim to be “more hip than hippy”.  Families can stay in their numerous triple rooms or the quadruple on offer at Conscious Museum Square and all locations are close to the wonderful Vondelpark which makes for the perfect start or end to a long city day.

The Lloyd Hotel and Cultural Embassy

How does one begin to describe the Lloyd Hotel and Cultural Embassy (pictured)?  A truly unique hotel with rooms at all grades and prices.  Not only do they offer interconnecting rooms but there are two rooms with beds that sleeps up to 7!  With kid-sized rocking chairs, picture books toys and games this place has to be seen to be believed.

NH City Centre

If you’re looking a quality, reliable chain hotel look no further than the 12 NH Hotels in and around Amsterdam.  The City Centre branch offers family rooms accommodating up to 4 as well as interconnecting options, cots and a kids’ corner for breakfast with small tables and chairs.

Vondel Hotels

The Vondel Hotel group have a range of 4 star hotels across the city.  Not only are each of the hotels unique and different but so are all the rooms.  Hotel Roemer and JL76 both offer rooms with a double bed and bunk, others have interconnecting options and all offer cots and babysitting.

The Volkshotel

At the Volkshotel you can stay just outside the city centre in a former newspaper office.  Their Ms Big rooms fit four with a double bed and two singles whilst Mrs Massive rooms have 2 doubles with the option of closing one part off for privacy.  With games on offer and a hugely accessible lobby as well as (joy of joys!) a lift, this is a great family friendly option.

Mercure and Novotels

At the Mercure and Novotel hotels you get the reliability of a 4* chain along with family rooms, suites and kids menus and play rooms.  Located both in the city and out by Schiphol airport the hotels are generally reliable if slightly out of the beating heart of the city.

Affordable

The Neighbours Magnolia Hotel

For a wallet-friendly option why not take a look at The Neighbour’s Magnolia (pictured).  Based in a pair of townhouses in the upmarket Old South of town next to the Vondelpark this is a popular option with families offering rooms for 4 and cots on request.

The Bridge Hotel

The Bridge Hotel is a three star right on the Amstel river.  The studio room offers 4 single beds as well as a small living area and fridge whilst the 'Apartment' has a double bed and a separate room with two singles.  Bear in mind, both are on the fourth floor with no lift, so better suited to slightly older children and definitely not buggy friendly.

Ibis Hotels

For an affordable chain hotel, look no further than the range of Ibis hotels in the city.  All offer interconnecting rooms and cots whilst the Ibis Budget Amsterdam City South also offers a games room for kids.

Apartments

Apartments can offer a brilliant option for families, providing space to relax, giving freedom for afternoon sleeps and avoiding a chaotic and expensive breakfast buffet.  There are of course huge numbers to choose from on AirBnB but bear in mind many Amsterdam houses are narrow and steep and with precipitous stairs they may not suit your family.

Yays Apartments

If you’d like an apartment but with added convenience and reliability, why not check out the gorgeous Yays serviced apartments based in historic properties minutes away from the city centre.  With three concierged buildings in vibrant local neighbourhoods, they offer not-only high spec bedrooms, kitchens and living rooms but also exceptional neighbourhood guides on arrival allowing you to live like a (well-heeled) local.

Kid and Coe

For an authentic but upmarket local experience check out Kid and Coe, a curated list of family homes for rent.  With 61 stylish Amsterdam properties on their books all owned and occupied by hip locals including architects and designers, these homes are seriously dreamy and fully equipped for kids.

Houseboats

Finally, and perhaps most fun of all is a stay on a houseboat.  Worried it’s not a family-friendly option?  Think again.  Many are entirely adapted with toddler safety in mind.  Amsterdam Houseboat Rentals offer lots of options including one formerly occupied by the company owners with concertina fences over the huge windows, a full size bath, underfloor heating and two gorgeous bedrooms.  With dozens of exclusively 5 star reviews on their site and a location in the vibrant Old West area close to playgrounds and some of the city’s best and most family-friendly eateries this could be the one that tops them all.

So there you have it.  From homes to hotels, chic to boutique, boats to bunks.  There’s a place for every weary head in the city. No excuses – start planning that dream stay.
