Volkshotel

First it was home to a broadsheet newspaper – De Volkskrant –, then to myriads of artists, creatives and artistic-creative start-ups in its function as a ‘creative incubator.’ Now, the building on Amsterdam’s Wibautstraat has entered its next incarnation: as a hotel. Its creative spirit, however, has not been stifled.

Rrooms with a view

The newly opened five-floor hotel boasts 172 rooms, a café, a nightclub, an exhibition space, a restaurant and a rooftop cocktail bar complete with hot tubs and a sauna. The building also contains four dance studios and 15 music studios. Previous inhabitants bar and club Doka in the basement and restaurant and nightclub Canvas on the seventh floor remain. The remaining space in the building still offers workspaces for creative businesses – meaning that in theory, hotel guests would not have to leave the building for either work or play. And the glorious view from the high-rise building guarantees you can see much of Amsterdam’s beauty in any case. [Image: Leonor von Salisch]
