The former industrial shipyard at NDSM constantly evolves with various new initiatives to create more greenery. Even now, the neighbourhood offers several wonderful places to relax, stay active and get closer to nature and the community.
Pllek

A restaurant with its own urban beach offering sweeping views of the River IJ, Pllek is the perfect spot to enjoy the natural scenery of Amsterdam. In addition to a delicious menu, this restaurant bar and cultural hotspot also boasts a revolving program on summer evenings including anything from live music performances and open-air film screenings. Throughout the year, Pllek also offers yoga sessions directly on the sand or indoors if the weather isn't ideal. Keep an eye on their class schedule for more creative ways to stay active.
Cycle routes

NDSM is the gateway to some exceptionally lush Dutch countryside, with all the windmills, quaint villages, highland cows and greenery that your heart could ask for. There are several spots to rent bikes at NDSM and various scenic cycle routes heading towards the Twiske nature area. The best thing of all - as with most of the Netherlands - is that the landscape is completely flat and perfect for peddling.

Start your day by waking up both body and mind with a revitalising morning stretch. NDSM is home to several high-quality yoga spaces, including Yoga School Noord NDSM and the serene studio at Pllek, both offering sessions for all levels. For something more fast-paced, head to NDSM Padel, an energetic spot to try the increasingly popular racket sport that's been taking the world by storm , complete with indoor courts and gear rental.
NoordOogst

Just west of NDSM, the NoordOogst Urban Agriculture Project is home to several fascinating initiatives that inspire more green thinking. The project also boasts its very own nature playground for children - a challenging obstacle course surrounded by trees, wild gardens and water. Featuring organic gardens, beekeeping, a brewery, workshops and opportunities for volunteering, NoordOogst offers a refreshing blend of sustainability, play and community.
Stand up paddle boarding at Het Twiske

A little further north - tucked between Zaandam and Purmerend, you'll find the scenic park Het Twiske, full of wildlife, trails and a large lake. Rent a paddle board and explore the natural surrounds from the water. Glide past reed beds, explore hidden spots and spot the occasional heron during this peaceful city escape. Perfect for a summer afternoon, a SUP at Het Twiske immerses you in nature without taking you far from the city itself.
