A community living outside the world
The documentary Silent Flood takes you to a closed religious community in Ukraine, the so-called 'kashketniky'. Similar to the Amish, these people live according to their own strict rules: no electricity, no modern medicine, no marriages outside the community and no participation in the army. They live on the Dniester river, in a landscape where the front lines of both the First and Second World War once ran.
War up close, without showing violence
What makes the film special is how it shows the Russian invasion of Ukraine without ever showing a soldier in combat. You see how the community reacts to a war that is taking place just outside their world. This provides an incisive look at the contrast between a quiet, secluded existence and the chaos of an armed conflict.
