A former boxer in a world of corruption
In On the Waterfront, Marlon Brando plays the role of Terry Malloy, a former boxer who works as a longshoreman in the port of Hoboken. Terry does odd jobs for union boss Johnny Friendly, without fully grasping the consequences. When he becomes unintentionally involved in a murder, he begins to doubt his loyalty.
Conscience versus power
Through Edie, the victim's sister, Terry gets to know a different side of the world. Father Barry encourages him to testify against the union. Terry faces a choice: stay silent and survive, or speak out and risk everything. Director Elia Kazan portrays this inner struggle with great power.
A film that earned its stripes
On the Waterfront won 8 Oscars, including those for Best Picture and Best Actor. The music by Leonard Bernstein reinforces the emotional weight of the film. Brando's iconic monologue, with the words 'I coulda been a contender', belongs to the most quoted scenes in film history.
