Musical theater about a forgotten Surinamese-Dutch composer
Helstone in Het Pand der Goden is a music theatre performance about the life and work of the Surinamese-Dutch composer Johannes Nicolaas Helstone. Creator Mathieu Wijdeven combines music, theatre, and live performance in a show where the boundary between music and story blurs.
A special collaboration on stage
Musician and performer Djuwa Mroivili and baritone Frank Dolphin Wong jointly shape the story. Wijdeven is responsible not only for the direction and concept but also performs on stage himself. The acoustic scenography is by sound artist Aurélie Nyirabikali Lierman, and the lighting design is by Scott Robin Jun.
Music and memories as building blocks
The performance draws on testimonies from family members and contemporaries of Helstone. In this way, the audience gains a multifaceted view of who he was and what his music meant. The production is partly based on conversations with, among others, Astrid Helstone, Marjory Helstone, and Stephanus Tokoe.
Production of the Dutch National Opera & Ballet
The performance is a guest program by the National Opera & Ballet in Amsterdam. Are you interested in this production? You can find more information and reserve tickets via the link on this page.
