A film about waiting and seeing life as it is
Cléo de 5 à 7 follows singer Cléo for 2 hours as she walks through Paris and waits for the results of a stomach cancer test. She is already convinced that she is ill and going to die. Along the way, she meets all kinds of people and looks at the world around her differently.
Nouvelle vague at its best
Director Agnès Varda made Cléo de 5 à 7 in 1962 as one of the striking films of the French nouvelle vague movement. The film takes place in almost real-time and shows Paris as a living city. Varda has a special eye for small, everyday moments that still say something bigger about life.
Encounter that changes everything
Towards the end of the film, Cléo meets a soldier who is leaving for the war in Algeria the next day. That encounter changes her perspective on her own situation. The film asks questions about fear, time, and what it means to truly live.
