Allard Pierson

The Allard Pierson is the museum where you will be introduced to the collections of the University of Amsterdam. Walk through Egyptian antiquity and the Greek and Roman worlds. Discover sculptures in the Plaster Gallery and maps and atlases in the GeoZone. In the permanent exhibition, you see mostly the archaeological collections, while the temporary exhibitions regularly highlight one of our other heritage collections.
From animal mummies to Roman glass
The permanent exhibition features a lot, From the animal mummies of Ancient Egypt and the decorated pottery of Greece to fragile Roman glass and textiles preserved by the desert sand. You can start your journey of discovery in the gallery on the origins of script, or in the Egyptian cabinet, with its stories about temples and gods. It’s easy to wander for hours in the galleries on the Greek and Roman worlds. Marvel at the reconstruction of an Etruscan tomb in Italy, full of pottery vessels.
Cast gallery
The Allard Pierson owns nearly 300 casts of sculptures from antiquity, mainly copies from the Greek classical and Hellenistic periods. These sculptures offer insight into how eras and cultures influenced each other.
Cabinet of Stories
Every few months, a special object from the collection takes center stage. The curator writes a blog about it and talks to an expert in a video. See the object for yourself in one of the museum's most beautiful rooms. What can an object from the past tell us today?
Geozone
