Amsterdam's medieval city center, with its alleyways and Red Light District, and the Warmoesstraat and Zeedijk as thoroughfares, has been a notorious place for drinking and carousing for centuries.
But it also remains the city center, home to residents, butchers, flower sellers, families raising their children, artists and musicians, and entrepreneurs who make a living. There exists a present, a past, and a future invisible to tourists and unknown to Amsterdammers who avoid the neighborhood.
To showcase the vibrant reality of the city center, the Warmoes Biennial invites artists to collaborate with residents and entrepreneurs to create a diverse art festival that surprises and educates visitors. It connects residents and everyone, thanks to art that is clever and beautiful, stimulating and moving, or sometimes simply quirky and funny, in this unique part of the city.
