From Hollywood flop to cult classic
Paul Verhoeven's Showgirls (1995) is considered one of the most notorious Hollywood productions of the 1990s. The film flopped upon release and won no fewer than 8 Razzies in 1996, including Worst Picture. Verhoeven personally collected them. In the years that followed, Showgirls grew into one of the major camp cult objects of his generation.
Ambition, glitz and ruthless rivalry
The film follows Nomi Malone, an ambitious drifter fighting her way up through the neon-lit world of Las Vegas. Through strip shows, backstage rivalry, and ruthless ambition, she attempts to reach the top. Lead actress Elizabeth Berkley throws herself fearlessly into the role. Every gesture, every line, and every rhinestone seems pushed beyond the bounds of good taste, making the film simultaneously hypnotic and hilarious.
