Janine Jansen

Janine Jansen belongs to the absolute world elite. With her, even an evergreen like Beethoven's Violin Concerto sounds new and enchanting. This melodic and sometimes dreamy work forms a classical counterpart to Toru Takemitsu's Dreamtime : subtle, atmospheric music that builds bridges between Eastern and Western sounds and between centuries-old and modern performance traditions. The spiritually charged Dreamtime is inspired by the mythology of Australian Aboriginals: wondrous sound effects render the often extremely realistic images that come to us in dreams. With this work by a fellow countryman, Japanese conductor Kazuki Yamada makes his debut with the Concertgebouw Orchestra.

Roussel

Roussel's Second Suite from Bacchus et Ariane also begins with a dream, but this gives way to a feast of vibrant timbres and energetic rhythms. Roussel stood in the shadow of his famous contemporaries Debussy and Ravel, yet this ballet music became a beloved repertoire piece. The music draws on classical themes and forms, but with the sharpness and rhythm of the modern era. The highlight is the concluding 'Bacchanal': fantastic to hear, to see, and – for the orchestra – to play.
