Netherlands Concert Choir and Toonkunstkoor Amsterdam: Dvořák's Stabat Mater

Grief and hope

The deeply religious Antonín Dvořák divided the twenty thirteenth-century stanzas of the Stabat Mater into ten parts. Nine of these are an expression of grief, though in the last one, the hope for paradise resonates. In that part, musical themes from the opening return, thus closing the circle. In his own way, Dvořák paints, with instrumentation and the voices of the choir and the four soloists, a poignant picture of human suffering and transience.

Special collaboration

Toonkunstkoor Amsterdam (founded in 1829) and the Nederlands Concertkoor (1987) join forces in the performance of a grand choral work. They are joined by students and teachers from the Vossius Gymnasium, which is celebrating its anniversary. An extraordinary collaboration, and thus a celebration of the vibrant choral culture in our capital.

To an amateur musician a performance at the Concertgebouw is always special, often marking the end of an extensive period of rehearsals.
