Wilhelm Friedemann

This programme, led by artistic director Johanna Soller, unfolds from the smallest musical core: the monophonic Gregorian Ave Maris Stella. The dark atmosphere of this song transitions into the Sinfonia in D minor by Bach's eldest son Wilhelm Friedemann. A talented composer, but less well-known than his father and brother.

Carl Philipp Emanuel

How different things went for Carl Philipp Emanuel, the most successful of all the Bach children, who was known in the second half of the 18th century as 'the great Bach'. The Magnifcat, his first large-scale vocal work, breathes the spirit of his father's Magnificat and his Hohe Messe. At the same time, it casts a glance forward to the music of Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn.
