Petrit Çeku

He was previously a guest in the Kleine Zaal with his trio Elogio; now, the charismatic musician Petrit Çeku makes his solo debut in the Masters of the Guitar series. Kosovo-born Çeku is one of the leading guitarists of his generation, and his trophy cabinet is accordingly well-stocked. Critics call Çeku a 'soloist of the highest caliber'. Among the albums he has recorded is a recording of Bach's Suites for solo cello , quite a feat on the guitar. Tonight, Çeku presents a wide array of colors in music ranging from Barber and Paganini to Rodrigo. The opening notes are by Bach.

Barber, Paganini and Rodrigo

Not every musician is a jack-of-all-trades like Paganini: he was not only a brilliant composing violinist, but also an excellent guitarist. He wrote chords with the guitar on his lap, and occasionally improvised on the violin. Often, a guitar recital is also a demonstration of the art of arrangement; from Bach to Barber, many works sound surprisingly beautiful on the instrument. Petrit Çeku shows that he is a master of this art as well; Debussy's richness of color comes fully into its own on six strings. In Rodrigo's work, Spanish temperament rounds off the program.
