Mattias Spee - Insomnia

Mattias Spee is a Dutch pianist and composer who leaves his unique mark on Dutch musical life. NRC described him as 'an Edgar Allan Poe-esque storyteller', Grachtenfestival called him 'one of the most adventurous pianists in the scene', and November Music announced him as 'perhaps the greatest piano talent we have in the Netherlands'. Spee is praised for his artistic versatility and his 'velvet touch'.

Mattias Spee

By performing his own piano music, Spee follows in the footsteps of the great composers of history. With his 9-part cycle Insomnia, Spee has already toured all the major concert halls in the Netherlands and, fittingly enough, the Museum Night in Amsterdam and the Night of Imagination in Ghent. In November 2026, record label Challenge Records released Insomnia as an album, and now Spee is bringing this music to the Amsterdam Piano Series as well. After the intermission, he will perform one of his favorite works by a composer he greatly admires.

Stravinsky's The Firebird

The Firebird is one of the most legendary ballets ever written. The first performance was a sensation, loved by critics and the general public alike. Over the decades , The Firebird has proven itself to be an evergreen. Spee presents a piano arrangement created partly by the composer and partly by himself; a virtuoso affair that represents the familiar orchestral version with incredible effectiveness, but is perhaps even more spectacular due to the extreme finger acrobatics involved. This young virtuoso pianist has a knack for unusual repertoire, and this piano performance of The Firebird is therefore right up his alley.
