Lukas Sternath

Two seasons ago, he made a huge impression in the Kleine Zaal as a Rising Star; now he is back: pianist Lukas Sternath. He calls his life as a musician a dream. Born in Vienna, Sternath sang with the famous Wiener Sängerknabe but chose a career at the piano. He counts grandmasters such as Igor Levit, András Schiff, and Till Fellner among his teachers. In 2022, the Austrian won the ambitious ARD competition in Munich, and since then he has made giant strides in his career. Tonight, Sternath transports himself into the wandering souls of Schubert and Liszt.

Schubert and Liszt

The only consolation for the fact that Schubert did not complete his 'Unfinished' symphony is that he wrote his Wanderer Fantasy in the time he gained. In Romanticism, a wanderer was not, as is the case today, someone who spent his free time in a healthy way, but a universal metaphor for the searching human being. Schubert's Wanderer seeks but does not find; an obsessive theme. Liszt, too, depicts a wanderer, whose inner wandering leads past visible places, mountains, and cities. Liszt's pilgrim experiences romantic unrest, but he does eventually reach his destination, and you can hear that in the music.
