Koper8 transforms that invisible infrastructure into music
Improvisation as a live broadcast, where the noise is deliberately preserved – the crackle, the interference, the sound of the ocean exerting pressure on the line. Baritone and tenor saxophones are distorted by handmade electronic effects, drums influence the signal, and deep drones merge with psychedelic sounds.
The self-titled debut album by Koper8, recorded at Figure 8 Studios in Brooklyn, will be released this autumn on Defkaz Records. This album presentation marks the group's first performance in Europe. Koper8 was founded by Italian baritone saxophonist Giuseppe Doronzo and guitarist Jannis Anastasakis from Athens.
Doronzo has been a fixture in the Amsterdam improv scene for years and has worked with international greats such as Tilda Swinton and Hamid Drake. Anastasakis has played with, among others, Savina Yannatou and Arve Henriksen.
Tenor saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock and drummer Tom Rainey, both from Brooklyn, have performed here together more often in various bands with musicians such as Mary Halvorson and Kris Davis.
