Chamber music on the rooftop garden of The William Amsterdam
Viola player Elin Haver and pianist Jana Schell are giving a concert on the spacious rooftop garden of The William in Amsterdam. Especially for this concert, a grand piano is being hoisted onto the roof and the garden arranged to be fit for a concert. This creates a unique setting for an instrument that rarely takes center stage: the viola.
Rediscovered works for viola
The program consists of works by three composers. Hindemith's viola sonata had a sensational premiere in 1919 and subsequently fell into oblivion for a long time. Also featured is Nuit Calme by the Amsterdam-based Henriëtte Bosmans, originally written for cello but played on viola. The concert concludes with the fiery scherzo from the FAE Sonata by Brahms, Schumann, and Dietrich.

Haver and Schell introduce the works themselves. Haver gained experience for this during the Classic Express, a project in which music prize winners introduce children to classical music. Both musicians make use of instruments on loan from the Netherlands Musical Instruments Fund. Use the link on this page for tickets and more information.
