Daniel Lozakovich en Amsterdam Sinfonietta in Tsjaikovski en Mozart

Music created during difficult times often produces gems of works. This is also true of Tchaikovsky and Mozart. In Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings, composed during a marital crisis, one hears the composer's love for Russian folk music as well as for Mozart, whose Sinfonia concertante will be performed tonight. Amsterdam Sinfonietta and violinist Daniel Lozakovich, a familiar pair, will perform these masterpieces.

Daniel Lozakovich and Amsterdam Sinfonietta

For Swedish violinist Daniel Lozakovich, music is his great love. If you do not fully live the music, he says, it is impossible to convey something that lingers in someone's heart. Amsterdam Sinfonietta displays and hears the same devotion on stage. In a previous collaboration, the young Lozakovich and the Amsterdam string orchestra explored melodies by Tchaikovsky and Mozart. Once again, these composers, familiar to them, are on the program.

Tchaikovsky and Mozart

Tchaikovsky was both Russian and European. In 1880, following marital problems, he undertook a long journey through Italy, where he found the inspiration for his Serenade for Strings . In letters, he describes how he composed this work out of an inner necessity, and how the work therefore possesses artistic value. He also writes: 'The larger the string orchestra, the better the composer's intentions are realized.' In the Serenade, one hears Tchaikovsky's love for Russian folk music as well as for Mozart. Mozart, too, wrote his Sinfonia Concertante during difficult times: the death of his mother in 1779 creates a profound tragedy in the slow movement.
