Reparatie Remise: Textiel repareren met Textile Initiative

In this workshop, you will explore visible textile repair together with Bronwen Jones and Dasha Golova from Textile Initiative. You will practice sashiko stitching, inspired by the Japanese repair technique used to reinforce thin spots or mend holes in woven fabrics. You are encouraged to apply this technique in a playful and free way and to share stories through your garments as we work together.

How does it work?
Bring a garment or piece of textile to work on, such as cotton, silk, linen, denim, or household textiles (no knits). It may have holes, have become thin and need reinforcement, contain a stain you want to hide, or simply be a piece you want to decorate. There will also be fabric scraps available to practice on.
Participation is free, there are a limited number of spots available, and registration opens 10 days in advance.
Biographies
Textile Initiative is a series of events organized and curated by artists Bronwen Jones and Dasha Golova. The program explores the possibilities of textile-related practices by weaving them together with broader societal themes such as ecology, ethnography, traditions, and personal experiences. They invite various artists and makers to organize events and workshops together and welcome the public to actively participate in textile crafts.
Bronwen Jones
Bronwen Jones is an artist and textile repairer. Her artistic practice focuses on textiles and repair in a broad sense. She is interested in the stories and traces textiles carry, in how knowledge of textile crafts is passed down and preserved through time, and in how artisanal practices can remain relevant in our current era.
Dasha Golova
Dasha Golova is an artist and costume maker. Her practice follows two main themes: the concept of a supporting structure and the interplay between material research and character development. In recent years, Golova has focused on technical and creative solutions for costume design, particularly stretchy clothing for dancers. She is convinced that both materials and hands shape her artistic practice.
Repair Depot
Reparatie Remise is a series of ten workshops in Amsterdam-West in which artists and makers share knowledge about repairing and transforming everyday objects. All workshops are free and open to everyone, and encourage small-scale, locally rooted forms of repair.
