A controversial artist with a unique talent
Eight months before she was murdered in Auschwitz, German painter Charlotte Salomon killed her grandfather. We know this as she documented the event in a letter, a ‘confession’ written to a man she loved. A controversial figure then, but one whose art still demands attention. 'Life? or Theater?' is the largest single work of art created by a Jew during the Holocaust – almost 800 gouaches, 340 transparent overlays of text, a 32,000-word narrative and multiple classical-music cues. Shown here for the first time, it's a work which explores notions of family, love, death and creativity, and highlights Salomon's singular talent.
