Best fries in Amsterdam

Whether they're called frites, Dutch fries, patat, friet or Vlaamse frites, not all fries are created equal. In our quest to find the very best fries in Amsterdam (usually served in a paper cone and slathered in sauces), we've combed the entire city in search of the tastiest, crispiest, most mouth-watering frites - you can thank us later.

Head to the Frietboutique in Amsterdam’s Oud-Zuid neighbourhood for delicious freshly prepared fries (with the skin on, for extra vitamins!). Owners Sammy and Pebbles source their potatoes from local suppliers and even deliver their tasty taters to a long list of top Amsterdam restaurants, including Ron Gastrobar and the Hilton Doubletree.

Vleminckx de Sausmeester

Don’t let the modest size of this shop fool you: they’ve received rave reviews for their Belgian-style fries since the 1950s. But there’s more: Vleminckx de Sausmeester is also famous for (and you might have guessed it from the name) the range of sauces to choose from (25 different kinds!). In addition to the traditional sauces, you can also have your fries slathered with Andalusian, Hawaiian or yellow curry flavours. You’ll have to go back 25 times to try them all.

Fabel Friet

Fabel Friet is the hot newcomer to the fries scene in Amsterdam. Swing by to try some perfect fries with cheddar and parmesan toppings and don't miss their amazing homemade mayos created with local produce straight from the Albert Cuypmarkt. Why make the choice between truffle and piccalilli when you can have both? In addition to the fries, Fabel can perk you up with a croquette straight from Holtkamp bakery.

Vita has been perfecting the art of the fry for more than 17 years. And her efforts have been deservedly recognised. In 2014, Vita’s Friet’s traditional-style fries were awarded the prize for the best in the Netherlands by the newspaper AD. Find Vita’s stall on the corner of the Dapperstraat and the Commelinstraat from Monday through Saturday and decide for yourself if they’re the crunchiest and tastiest in town.

Freddy Fryday

At Freddy Fryday, they make their own Funky Fries from potatoes straight off the land, which they dress with a wide variety of toppings inspired by the Canadian Poutine and the "Kapsalon". Chose from one of the classic toppings like the pulled pork with BBQ sauce or the pulled chicken with mozzarella, honey and sesame seeds. But there are vegetarian friendly options too, like the Freddy's Nacho's or the Magic Mushroom. Tip: Freddy has specials, for instance Freddy's Stoof, the Dutch variation on the Poutine.

This atmospheric café serves high-quality Belgian frites that surpass the rest. There’s a good reason that Par Hasard has been a repeat recipient of the AD’s Best Fries in Amsterdam award. Skip your dinner plans, and head to one of Par Hasard’s three locations for fries with the perfect crunch and inner-fluffiness dipped in truffle mayo, or other delicious sauces.

Friethoes

Picking up award after award, these fries alone are enough of a reason to make the short trip to Haarlem (just 20 minutes from Amsterdam Central Station). The crispy Belgian-style frites are made from locally-sourced potatoes and fried to golden perfection in sustainable and natural oils. Friethoes’ food trucks also make an appearance at food festivals around the region.

Manneken Pis

You’ll probably spot the crowd from afar at this legendary stall popular among Amsterdammers and tourists alike. At Manneken Pis, spuds plucked from the clay soil in Zeeland are transformed into incredibly fresh and phenomenally tasty Flemish fries. Open until late in the evening, the shop offers 20 sauces that will have you licking your lips, including the unusual ‘weed’ sauce. Extra hungry? Order the largest sized cone, the Obelix - we dare you to finish this portion weighing nearly a kilo!

Frietsteeg

If you’re craving generous portions of hand-cut fries, take a seat at Frietsteeg in the Stadionbuurt (stadium district). Open daily, this chippy is located in a historic house on the water, complete with a sunny outdoor terrace. What better place to treat yourself to some of the most delicious fries in the city? You can also choose from more than 20 different sauces, including the Dutch classics.

Pont Neuf

If you haven’t already taken the ferry across the River IJ, drop everything and go now! When it comes to the best chips in Amsterdam Noord, Pont Neuf is a serious contender. This eatery is famous for organic fries that will make your mouth water. In an unusual cooking method, the potatoes are sliced fresh and then baked in soybean oil until crispy. Seating is limited, but the people-watching opportunities make up for it.
