Fish and seafood lovers in Amsterdam are spoilt for choice, with restaurants for all budget levels dotted across all corners of the capital. From no-nonsense fish and chips, exquisite shellfish and locally-sourced oysters to that catch of the day grilled to perfection, we've listed some of our favorite fish and seafood hotspots in Amsterdam.

Barracuda

Barracuda is the new restaurant from the chef of the Chateau Amsterdam winery, with fish and wine in the leading role. Prop up at the cosy bar of this converted warehouse with an industrial design that's typical of this part of Amsterdam-Noord. The concept is simple: tick what you want to eat and drink, order it at the bar and pay immediately. Recommended: Irish oysters, shellfish in white wine, crab legs, fritto misto and sardines from the plancha. All portions are generous and well-priced.

If the name sounds a bit strange to you, Sjefietshe is the Amsterdam take on the word ceviche - and that means you’ve come to the right place to try this Latin American fish dish. What started as a pop-up is now one of De Pijp’s unmissable foodie hotspots, with an elegant changing menu encompassing creative small plates, a variety of zingy ceviches, baked octopus and stand-out cocktails.

Le Forel

This stylish fish bar on the Bosboom Toussaintstraat looks like it belongs in Paris with its red red awning and small round tables. And whilst the menu at Le Forel showcases several French classics such as the lobster bisque and fruits de mer, the kitchen also knocks up unusual combinations like scallops with coconut hollandaise or halibut fish & chips with watercress mayo and jalapeño. Every fish served is farm fresh. That is why Le Forel is closed on Mondays, after all, there is no fishing on Sundays.

Simply Fish

Just around the corner from Amstelveenseweg, tuck into delicious coastal catches at Simply Fish, the go-to address in Oud-Zuid for seafood. The menu is packed with locally-sourced delicacies from Zeeland and the surrounding area including Oosterschelde lobster, oysters, shellfish, shrimp and samphire. The chef’s signature dish? A rich lobster bisque.

This restaurant is truly a hotspot among fish lovers in Amsterdam, where platters of oysters and fruits de mer tear out of the kitchen. Tuck into a daily-changing menu of fresh fish from Zeeland and stand out dishes such as the lobster bisque. You’ll receive expert advice on which wine pairs best with each oyster, sourced from various regions.

Take a seat at this wonderful fish restaurant and oyster bar dreamed up by brothers Menno and Bastiaan Beijer, just a stone's throw from Vondelpark. You’ll feel like you’re on holiday as you tuck into Franco-inspired seafood and fish dishes of all shapes and sizes with classics such as scallops, sole, and tuna wellington taking centre stage on the menu. Bear in mind that the price point suits that of the chic Oud-Zuid district, but an evening of unadulterated decadence is always worth the treat.

The gin list features not only Hendrick’s, Monkey 47, Gin Mare and friends, but also an extensive range of creative gin-based cocktails, inviting guests to linger long after the last oyster has been slurped.

Pesca

This concept eatery throws out all the rules of a traditional seafood restaurant by doing away with the fixed menus and white linen table cloths. Instead, customers are invited to participate in an authentic fish market experience by choosing your fish and side dishes from the counter yourself. To avoid waste, you’ll always find a changing selection of fish depending on delivery, seasonal availability and weather conditions.

The Seafood Bar

With three locations in Amsterdam, The Seafood Bar serves up all manner of fishy dishes in bright and airy surroundings. There’s plenty to choose from including sashimi and grilled octopus, king crab legs from the plancha, fish and chips and smoked mackerel salad. The restaurant also has a big push towards sustainability, working with suppliers to choose the best available fish and seafood to maintain coastal stocks.
