New restaurant: The Food Department
Tucked away on the top floor of the monumental Magna Plaza behind Dam Square is Amsterdam’s newest high-end food hall. With 14 food stands and three bars, you’re spoilt for choice but we’ve gone and tested them all, so you don’t have to. Our favourite was the Israeli pita specialist Bepita – we loved the arais (house-made pitas stuffed with spiced lamb) and sabich (roast aubergine, egg and hummus stuffed pitas) – but we also couldn’t stop picking at Van ‘t Spit’s perfectly prepared rotisserie chicken and Ta Toru’s Moluccan lemongrass-skewered chicken satay.

New menu: Anniversary Afternoon Tea at Peacock Alley
Talented pastry chef Vipin Charly seems to step up his game with each seasonal Afternoon Tea offering, and his latest creations for the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam’s 5-Year Anniversary are no exception. Inspired by the 8,000 tulips and other spring flowers growing in the garden courtyard of the six canalside mansions that make up the hotel, you can expect delectably attractive treats such as smoked salmon-beet roses; cheeky little lime cheesecake bees; coconut-strawberry tulip bulbs; and fabulously fluffy vanilla and chocolate scones. We couldn’t think of anything more ideal for Mother’s Day.

New menu: NOMADS goes Portugal
This Eastside restaurant, with its changing cuisine themes, was inspired by the wanderlust of its chef and owners, who take their culinary curiosity to a different destination twice a year. Previous menus have touched down in Peru and Jordan, and we’re looking forward to the next six months, which will be dedicated to all things Portuguese. There’s much to admire, from a creative mackerel escabeche (pictured) and an exciting asparagus dish that plays with pickling, to traditional salt cod fritters, and a playful riff on the meaty Porto speciality francesinha. The attractive aquamarine décor, bursting with plants and pretty design details, deserves a special mention.

New shop: WAHTS Brand Store
Situated on De Pijp’s best hidden shopping street, is the first brand store of Dutch men’s fashion label WAHTS, which according to style bible Wallpaper* “makes tailored leisurewear that’s dapper for down-time”. From tech jersey shorts and suede sneakers to sleek bomber jackets, it’s all about contemporary comfort for the modern man.

New restaurant: GUTS
Amsterdam’s original concept chameleon (formerly Guts & Glory) has ditched the restrictions of themed menus in favour of evergreens like grilled ribeye or turbot for two, both served with seasonal asparagus and barbecued potatoes. The oysters with burned lemon-and-onion vinaigrette, langoustines with rock samphire sauce, sweetbread nuggets with salsa verde and the lamb shanks with olive-lemon cream, gravy and hearty bread (pictured) come highly recommended. Whether you stop by for lunch in-between hitting the nearby Kalverstraat and Utrechtsestraat shopping streets or stay for dinner, you’ll be glad you did.

New bar: Super Lyan
When the team behind Dandelyan (named “The World’s Best Bar” in 2018) announced that they’ll be opening their first international venue in central Amsterdam, the excitement was almost palpable. They’ve mercilessly transformed the moody 17th century vibe of the former House Bar into a playful post-retro playground that features a 1950s-style neon bar, eclectic living room and a bright blue-and-white indoor “garden”. Go for vegan donuts and Millionaire Shakes by day or, when cocktail hour rolls round, try their twists on the classics, like Super Lyan’s take on an Old Fashioned with beeswax and flamed orange zest, served alongside beetroot bitterballen, deep-fried mayonnaise (yes, really!) and other shareable bites.
