The encounter
Two men meet on stage. Their bodies reflect their strength and connection to the present. Yet each carries the complex history of colonization with them. One is a child of survivors, the other an heir to oppressors. Two worlds collide. Is peace between them possible?
A new perspective on peace
_ROOM IN OUR HOUSE_ offers an innovative story in these challenging times. Inspired by the age-old peace treaty between the Dutch and the Haudenosaunee, the team from Nicole Beutler Projects delves into the community in North America. There, they discover a world of democracy, equality, and gentleness.
Collaboration and responsibility
Under the direction of inspiring speaker Michelle Schenandoah (Oneida/Haudenosaunee) and choreographer Nicole Beutler, with texts by Ty Defoe, _ROOM IN OUR HOUSE_ invites you. You explore your own role and responsibility in creating peace. It shows that peace is not a given, but requires continuous effort.
Dance, music, and text
Four hundred years ago, Dutch ships sailed up the Hudson River and met the Haudenosaunee. This led to the _Two Row Wampum_: two parallel lines that each sail their own course, without domination. _ROOM IN OUR HOUSE_ brings this history to life in a performance where dance, music, and text come together.
Future stories and connection
After the climate trilogy, Nicole Beutler Projects is focusing on new visions for the future. They create political-poetic performances that strive for an inclusive society and call attention to social justice. This production is the first chapter of _CLOSE ENCOUNTER / Future Stories_, a series about encounters and shared futures.
