Kalpanarts - Winged in Theater Bellevue

In a time when polarisation is increasing and individuals increasingly find themselves positioned against one another, Winged poses an urgent question: how do you move together without losing yourself?

In Winged Kalpanarts explores the power of collectivity. Inspired by the phenomenon of murmuration (flocks of birds moving through the air in perfect harmony), the performance explores how individuals relate to one another within a larger whole. When do you move with the group? When do you diverge? And what happens when trust becomes the guiding principle?

A flock of birds has no leader, no fixed hierarchy. Yet breathtaking precision emerges. Direction changes in a fraction of a second. The whole responds as one body. In Winged this natural phenomenon becomes a mirror for our society: how do we find cohesion in a world that is accelerating and fragmenting?

The dancers form ever-changing constellations: they propel one another forward, catch one another, break out of structures and return. The tension between autonomy and connection becomes physically tangible. Trust is not an abstract concept, but a concrete action: jumping without knowing who will catch you.

As always with Kalpanarts, music is a driving force. Rhythmic patterns, live energy and layered compositions form a beating heart beneath the choreography. Indian influences resonate in contemporary soundscapes, creating a hypnotic flow in which body and sound become one.

Winged premieres during Julidans and is made in co-production with HIIIT. The collaboration with HIIIT strengthens the physical and rhythmic intensity of the performance: movement and percussion respond directly to one another, like birds following one another’s course.

Winged is a performance about choosing a direction in a time of uncertainty. About moving with the flow and resisting it. About how a group can be stronger than the sum of its parts, without the individual disappearing.

Including a post-performance discussion with Kalpana Raghuraman.
