A horror film about family secrets and obsession
Recluse is the feature film debut of screenwriter and director Henry Chaisson. The film follows sound engineer Joan (played by Sasha Frolova), who returns to her remote childhood home in New England. What begins as a caretaking task for her father slowly grows into a confrontation with a dark family history full of occultism and intergenerational trauma.
Sound as a narrative element
A striking element in Recluse is the use of sound. Joan is a sound engineer and becomes fascinated by mysterious recordings she finds in the house. The sound design plays a central role in this: it heightens the tension and draws you deeper into the story. The threat builds slowly, without cheap jump scares.
