Dutch National Ballet - Jump Dance Day

Come and dance on the most fun day of the year! During the Jump Dance Day, young people step into the world of Dutch National Ballet. In a range of workshops, they explore dance, music and imagination for themselves. The theme of this edition is Cinderella. The workshops are inspired by the well-known fairy tale, which returns to our stage in December 2026. Children and young people dance in four age groups, not according to level. No dance experience is needed: enjoying movement is enough.

Dance in the studios of Dutch National Ballet
The Jump Dance Day takes place in the ballet studios of Dutch National Ballet, in the building of Dutch National Opera & Ballet on Waterlooplein. This is where the dancers of Dutch National Ballet train every day.
For one day, children and young people get to step into this special world themselves. They dance in real ballet studios, are taught by experienced teachers, and draw inspiration from the story of Cinderella.
Information about groups
The Jump Dance Day is for children and young people aged 4 to 17. For the youngest participants, fantasy, movement and a first introduction to ballet take centre stage. Older participants explore repertoire, technique and expression in greater depth.
Group Pliè (ages 4 - 6)
Group Chassé (ages 7 - 10)
Group Assemblé (ages 11 - 13)
Group Jeté (ages 14 - 17)
Group Jeté consists of two groups: pointe and repertoire. For the pointe group, some pointe experience is required: you can already stand on pointe and have had at least ten classes.
Repertoire workshop with Lucy Büchel
During the repertoire workshops, participants work on movement, musicality and expression. This year, they take inspiration from the world of Cinderella.
Lucy Büchel began dancing at a young age at her mother’s ballet school. She completed pre-professional classical training in Germany and later studied dance teaching in Amsterdam. Enjoyment of dance is central to her classes. With great energy and attention, she helps participants develop technique, imagination and musicality, each in their own way.
Pointe class with former principal dancer Jane Lord
The pointe class is taught by Jane Lord, former principal dancer with Dutch National Ballet. Jane now works at the Dutch National Ballet Academy, still regularly performs character roles in ballet productions, and specialises in ballet shoes.
Thanks to her many years of experience as a dancer and her expertise in ballet shoes, Jane knows better than anyone what is involved in pointe work, technique and careful progression. Every year, she gives an inspiring pointe class during the Jump Dance Day.
