2 cities. 2 sounds. One night at the museum

The nights of Amsterdam and London meet during ADE at the Van Gogh Museum. Experience an evening full of music and art, inspired by the night paintings that James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) created in London, and the exhibition Whistler. Dandy en dwarsdenker at the Van Gogh Museum.

Music from London and Amsterdam

This evening, two musical worlds come together: the Amsterdam band Devon Rexi and the London musician Coby Sey. Their sound varies from experimental electronica, dub and hip hop to dream pop.

Artist collective uncloud transforms the museum into a visual night landscape with image and sound.

About the artists

Devon Rexi

Devon Rexi is an Amsterdam band with a quirky sound that makes playful, experimental music with influences from dub. Distorted Farsi vocals, layered drum patterns, alien sounds and driving bass lines create a sound that seems to be located somewhere between two worlds.

Coby Sey

Coby Sey is a songwriter, producer, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and DJ. After being active for years in the DIY scene of South East London, he developed a completely unique sound and style as an artist and performer.

He combines live instrumentation, samples and experiment with recognizable influences from hip hop, noise, jazz and grime, which he brings together in an alienating, dub-coloured sound. In addition, he has a monthly show on NTS Radio.

In his performance, Coby admires the artistic value of the paintings by James McNeill Whistler, but at the same time asks critical questions about Whistler as a person, his views on race and the meaning of his work today. In that sense, his performance goes against Whistler's own conviction that art can be created purely for art's sake.
