About the exhibition

The problems in Ter Apel and the wrangling surrounding the Spread Act have been in the news every day for some time. It raises the question why a prosperous country like the Netherlands is unable to provide good shelter for refugees. Unfortunately, this is not the first time that the government has failed to accommodate refugees. In the past too, refugees have been poorly received or received under wrong pretexts. A poignant example of this in Dutch history is the story of the Lutheran refugees from Salzburg from 1732. The Luther Museum Amsterdam tells their story. Why? Because it is more topical than ever, because history never repeats itself, but always rhymes.

Rainbow Soul Club

The exhibition is a mixture of historical material about refugee history and contemporary representations of welcome. The Rainbow Soulclub, a collective of artists, students, undocumented immigrants and homeless people, has created a work of art in the monumental corridor of the museum for this exhibition. Blessings from the various communities of newcomers in Amsterdam hang in the monumental corridor of the museum. Come by and experience it for yourself.
