Collecting the City
Collecting the City is an exhibition series in which the Amsterdam Museum, together with various communities and organizations, collects and presents the vibrant city of Amsterdam. In this fourth edition, we present the small exhibition Kazerne Reigersbos in which five young makers talk about their neighborhood in Amsterdam South East.
An important place in South East
Reigersbos is a green neighbourhood in Amsterdam South East. Many parents with growing children live in family homes with gardens, and many creative young people can also be found in the neighbourhood. They all like living in this neighborhood but just like the municipality, they indicate that there is also work to be done. The public green areas, playgrounds and sports fields need to be replaced, and in some places, they feel unsafe. In addition, there is a shortage of housing for young people and the elderly, and there are no facilities, such as a meeting place for young people and people from the neighbourhood.
Breeding ground
From that lack, the neighbourhood initiative Kazerne Reigersbos was created in 2020. The municipality allowed residents to temporarily convert a former fire station into a place for the neighbourhood. This place has grown into a cultural centre and creative breeding ground. There are studios for entrepreneurs, artists and cultural organizations. In addition, the building has a music production room, community workshop, (community) stage, community kitchen, coffee bar, gym, and flexible workspaces.
Indispensable
According to the initiators, the place has become indispensable, and they hope they can stay. In this exhibition, they show why. The film shows why the Barracks were founded and what role the place has come to play in the neighbourhood. The second room is a workspace for the Future Tellers project. A group of young makers from De Kazerne will work on an art installation for this project in the coming year. With this they share their vision of the future of their neighbourhood.
