Did you know that Overhoeks is the oldest part of Amsterdam-Noord? And that right behind Eye was Amsterdam's gallows field? Verhaalpaal Noord is an open-air exhibition about the unknown history of Amsterdam-Noord. Within 45 minutes, you can walk from pole to pole and learn all about this dynamic district.
Verhaalpaal Noord is a project by creative studio Zeppa in collaboration with writer Bas Kok. From our former Shell site studio, we see Noord changing rapidly. Noord was the district of craft and industry, but now it is a district where the creative sector still finds space. With Verhaalpaal Noord, we show that the district has undergone many changes over the centuries and is constantly reinventing itself.
Open-air exhibition
Verhaalpaal Noord is an open-air exhibition on Overhoeks that can be visited 24 hours a day. At six locations, the Verhaalpalen mark important events or stories from history. The exhibition starts right behind the ferry on Buiksloterweg.
On view for a year
Verhaalpaal Noord opens on 20 March 2025 and will be displayed for one year. If it becomes a success, we aim to create a permanent open-air exhibition on the history of Amsterdam North, from the rough working area to a creative renewal area. Amsterdam-Noord has reason to be proud of its past and present!
With accompanying book
In addition to the content for the Verhaalpalen, Bas Kok wrote the accompanying book (in Dutch): Gogme, hoe Amsterdam een wereldstad werd. This accessible book about Amsterdam is written from the Nordic perspective, making it possible to dive deeper into the stories.
